To print an AI image you need about 39 pixels per centimetre (100 dpi) as an absolute minimum and about 59 per centimetre (150 dpi) for a good result. A phone or laptop screen shows between 90 and 220 pixels per inch, across a small area. Printing on canvas or glass spreads those same pixels over half a metre or more, so every weakness in the file grows with it. Three problems repeat in AI files. Resolution that is simply too low, which looks sharp on screen and soft and smeared in print. Compression artifacts - small blocks around hard edges - created when the file is saved as a low-quality JPG through a screenshot or a messaging app. And details the generator never resolved, such as fingers, lettering or architectural lines, which the eye completes on a small screen and cannot ignore at half a metre. The practical rule: always keep the original file at the highest resolution the generator offers, and never send a screenshot.
The table converts every catalogue size into the pixel count it requires. The first column is the absolute minimum at 100 dpi - below that we do not recommend printing at all. The second is our recommendation, 150 dpi, which keeps edges clean even from close range. The last column relates to the typical output of common image generators, between 1,024 and 2,048 pixels on a side. Remember that viewing distance grows with size: a 100x150 cm piece is usually seen from almost two metres, so 100 dpi is more acceptable there than on a 30x45 cm piece viewed from one metre. Every file sent to us is checked before printing: actual resolution, aspect ratio against the size you ordered, compression artifacts and colour space. If the file falls below the minimum for the size you chose, we say so up front and offer two options - drop one size, or try an upscale and look at the result together. We do not quietly print a file we know will come out soft, because the result would disappoint you and come straight back to us. A second point worth settling early is aspect ratio. Many generators produce a 1:1 square or a 2:3 frame, and a size such as 100x200 cm needs a serious crop. Better to decide together what gets cut than to discover it after printing.
Up to a point, yes. Modern AI upscalers reconstruct detail convincingly and can double or quadruple resolution with no visible damage, which is enough to take a 2,048 pixel file up to a 60x90 cm print. Beyond that the picture changes: the upscaler is no longer reconstructing information but inventing it, and at large print sizes that reads as a plastic texture, over-smoothed lines and details that have quietly vanished. Three cases make it worse: a source already compressed as a low-quality JPG, an image containing text, and a face in close-up. The rule we work by is to upscale up to four times from a clean source and no further.
This is not only a matter of taste - the material decides how perfect the file has to be. Canvas is forgiving: the matt weave breaks up the light and partly hides slight softness, fine noise and uneven tonal transitions. Tempered glass does the opposite. It sharpens edges and deepens colour, so it also displays the artifacts. The simple rule: a strong, clean AI file belongs on glass, which gives the saturated colours of a generator a depth canvas cannot match; a borderline file belongs on canvas.
