The right size for art above a sofa or bed is a piece whose width is about 67% to 75% of the furniture beneath it, with the center of the piece hung about 145 cm off the floor and its bottom edge about 15 to 25 cm above the backrest or headboard. Here a size mistake shows immediately: a piece that is too small gets swallowed and looks lost above a huge piece of furniture, and one that is too wide spills past the line of the furniture and feels unstable. The good news is that there is no need to guess. All you need is one tape measure, the width of the furniture, and a simple formula.

The Formula: 67% to 75% of the Furniture's Width

Measure the width of the sofa or bed, and multiply by 0.67 to 0.75. The result is the desired total width of the piece, whether it is a single work or a series. Aim for the lower end of the range for a calm, airy room, and the higher end for a more dramatic presence. If you chose a series, the total width includes the gaps between the pieces as well.

Hanging Height: The Same Rule for Sofa and Bed

Whether above a sofa or above a bed, the center of the piece is hung about 145 to 150 cm off the floor, the average eye level. But above furniture, the relationship to the furniture matters more than the absolute number: keep the bottom of the piece about 15 to 25 cm above the backrest or headboard. A smaller gap makes the piece look cramped, and too large a gap disconnects it from the furniture and makes it float.

A Series: Calculate the Total Width as One Unit

A diptych (two pieces) or a triptych (three) is an excellent solution above a wide piece of furniture, but the key is to plan them as a single composition. Keep an even gap of 5 to 8 cm between the pieces, and make sure the total width (pieces plus gaps) meets the 67% to 75% formula. A tight series reads as one large piece; a series spaced too far apart breaks into several separate images that lose their connection to one another.

Format: Horizontal for the Sofa, Flexible for the Bed

The sofa is a distinctly horizontal piece of furniture, so a wide horizontal format will almost always flow with it naturally and give a sense of stability. Above a bed there is more freedom: a wide horizontal format is the safe classic, but a large square piece or a refined vertical triptych can work beautifully and add presence above the headboard without feeling oppressive.

Don't Fill the Wall Edge to Edge

After you have calculated the width, the temptation to fill the entire wall is a mistake. Generous margins of bare wall on either side of the piece let it breathe and convey the luxury of a gallery display. Let the piece be the hero of the wall, with breathing room around it; that is the difference between a designed wall and a cluttered one.
