Step 1: Choose the Pieces and the Unifying Theme

First of all, gather the pieces that will make up the wall. So that it reads as a single unit rather than a jumble, choose one connecting thread: a shared color palette, a consistent style (for example, all abstract, or all black-and-white photography), or an identical finish. An odd number of pieces is recommended (3, 5, 7), the visual eye loves it.

Step 2: Arrange Everything on the Floor

Clear a stretch of floor the width of the wall, and arrange the pieces on it. Play with the layout: start with the largest or most striking piece as an anchor, and build the rest around it. Keep even gaps of 5 to 8 cm, and balance the "visual weight", do not cluster all the dark pieces on one side. Photograph the layout on your phone once you are happy with it, so you have an accurate record.

Step 3: Prepare Paper Templates

This is the step that separates an amateur from a professional. Cut a rectangle from newspaper or parchment paper in the exact size of each piece, and mark on it where the hanger sits on the back. Tape the templates to the wall with light masking tape, exactly according to the layout you photographed. Now you can see the complete wall, without a single hole.

Step 4: Fine-Tune on the Wall Itself

Step back, look, and move the templates until everything feels right. Anchor the composition around a shared center line at about 150 cm, the height at which the eye meets art comfortably. Use a level to make sure the templates are straight. This is the moment to fix everything, when the cost is just a little masking tape.

Step 5: Hang from the Center Outward

Set the central or largest piece first, and work outward from it. Hanging through the mark on the template ensures every nail goes in exactly the right place. Hang, remove the paper around the piece, and continue to the next piece. With this method you will hardly need any corrections.

Five Mistakes to Avoid

• Uneven gaps, the first thing the eye registers as "messy." Measure, don't estimate.
• Hanging too high, a gallery wall should live at eye level, not above the door line.
• No connecting thread, without a shared color, style, or finish, it looks random.
• A wall that's too crowded, let the pieces breathe; the margins around the wall matter too.
• Skipping the paper templates, five minutes of paper save ten unnecessary holes in the wall.
